We at CR1 UK Football Trials certainly know what we are looking for when it comes to the recognising and recruiting of players who have the potential to go on and make it within the professional game.

Whilst most of Colin’s success has been in the ‘Coaching and Development’ of players, he also has great success in the recruitment side of the game too. He has personally identified and scouted  many players that have gone on to have very successful careers within the professional game.

Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United FC, Liverpool, Swansea and England

Whilst working as a coach for West Ham United FC Colin ‘spotted’ a young Jonjo Shelvey playing in a 5-a-side tournament and immediately invited Jonjo into the club’s academy. Jonjo accepted the offer and signed with the club and spent two further seasons at West Ham United FC Academy before deciding to move onto Charlton Athletic FC. It wasn’t too long before Jonjo was making his full first team ‘debut’ at the tender age of just 16 years and 59 days making him the youngest ever player to represent the club.

Jonjo on Colin:

“Colin was a coach at West Ham United and spotted me playing in a local tournament in Romford, East London. He invited me along to West Ham United’s Academy and the rest is history so to speak. Colin had a very good reputation as a coach and was well known for helping to develop and for producing many young players and so much so that even when I signed for Liverpool I continued to have ‘one on one’ sessions with him whenever I could. I would without doubt recommend The CR1 UK Football Trials and Residential Camps especially if you believe you have the talent and are good enough to make it as a professional player! These trials and residential camps are a really great opportunity to ‘showcase your talent’  and to have the chance of being coached by Colin and his team of top coaches will be an experience in itself. You will also be seen by many scouts and that may be just the opportunity you need to help you on the way to becoming a ‘pro’ footballer, Good luck!”

Colin on Jonjo:

“Jonjo was ‘easy’ to spot and his natural ability made him ‘stand-out a mile’ for me. He was so ‘neat and tidy’ in possession and his ability to ‘see things early’ and ‘to have a picture’ was there for the ‘trained’ eye to see!  Besides being technically very efficient, he already had a good understanding of the game and possessed a ‘winning mentality’. His desire and commitment along with his very competitive nature was there from an early age and without doubt those are the characteristics that have helped him to become the ‘top’ player he is today! I am very proud to be able to say that I ‘spotted’ his potential at an early age and indeed have been both very ‘lucky and privileged’ to have worked with him and help with his development over the years.”

Michael Kightly, who went on to play in The Premier League for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Burnley and Stoke City as well as making several appearances for England at U/21 level was another ‘high’ profile player Colin had recognised had ‘potential’ and scouted at an early age.

Michael Kightly

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

Colin on Michael:

“At the time, I was coaching at Tottenham Hotspur FC and Michael attended one of my soccer schools in Basildon, Essex. I invited him into the club for a trial which was successful and he signed and stayed at the club until he was 16. After he was ‘released’ I also invited him to attend a combined football and education programme that my company was running in collaboration with a local college of further education of which he decided to attend. After a very short period of time Michael was approached by the local professional club Southend United and left the college scheme to sign as an apprentice for the club before going on to make his debut for the league club. Michael was then ‘released’ again and went onto sign and represent Grays Athletic FC in non-league football before finally making his way back to play professional football by signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.”

Dwight Gayle  currently of Newcastle United  FC was another player that Colin has coached and worked with whilst in his position as Assistant Manager/1st Team Coach at Bishops Stortford FC.

Dwight Gayle

Newcastle United FC

Colin on Dwight:

“Even though we were playing ‘non league‘ football in the Blue Square North division, I went on record saying when interviewed by Sky Sports News that I believed Dwight was a player capable of playing ‘top’ flight football and by that I mean he would one day play in The Premier League which he has done with both Crystal Palace FC and his current side Newcastle United FC. Dwight was great to work with and he had many attributes for a young player. He was ‘neat and tidy’ in possession and could play with his ‘back to goal’ bringing others into play whilst doing so. He also had the pace and ability to get in behind the opposition both with and without the ball and was a real threat with his finishing ability. Although relatively small in height, he was quite powerful and was very competitive in the air too and really had an eye for a goal, scoring many goals during that particular season. Most of all he was a ‘versatile’ player and could play wide often drifting inside to ‘link’ play although Dwight himself preferred to play down the middle as a central forward. I am pleased to see that he has continued to develop and has established himself within the professional game and proud to say that I always believed he was good enough to play at this level after working with him and never doubted his ability to adjust to full time professional football.”

Reid Tips Gayle for Success

“Dwight’s been very instrumental,” Reid told Sky Sports. “I think he’s scored nearly 30 goals. To do that with a side positioned where we are is a great credit to him. “I think he’s one for the future.
